One of the four founders, a duelist from the West Country. He wanted students with nerve, and the sword that answers a worthy Gryffindor is his. He quarreled with Salazar Slytherin over whether Muggle-born children should be taught, and he stayed when Slytherin left. The books name him when the Sorting Hat tells the founding, and again whenever that sword is needed.
